Poetry Favourites

Mondays from 1pm

Presented by Valerie Holton

I present poetry readings and I try to select for you a collection of Australian Poetry and other poetry favourites in English, but I might even read a French poem!

I read anything I think you might enjoy, so, Patterson and Lawson and others you may have had to learn at school like Wordsworth and Longfellow and there is a lot of poetic stuff in Shakespeare too you might like.

Until recently I was not very keen on Blank verse and poetry that did not rhyme but there is really something beautiful in the flow of the work of our modern poets and some of our local poets.

I think I have always enjoyed poetry because my mother belonged to the generation that had to learn poems off by heart even if they did not understand them, she could recite ‘Vitai Lampada’… you know it, “Play up, Play up and play the Game !” all the way through. I dare say your grandmothers could too!

But it is just as relevant and thought provoking to us as well and it also reminds us just how different life was for our forebears not just Australia but the travelling bards that strolled through Europe in times gone by.

So tune in on Mondays at 1pm and if you have any requests send them in on an email I will try very hard to find them for you.
